Basics

There are 2 network operators in Angola:

  • Unitel
  • Movicel

Unitel is the largest provider in Angola wheareas Movicel is partially owned by the state telephone company.

Pre-paid SIM cards are available in their outlets and from street vendors as well. Registration is mandatory, and in case you have bought your SIM from a street vendor, you will have to visit an outlet of your chosen provider for registration. Bring your passport and valid visa or residence permit in order to allow for mandatory registration, otherwise your SIM card may get suspended until the registration has been processed.

Typical for Angola is that telecom operators quote the charges in tarif units (UTT). Each unit is at this moment 7.2 Kwanza's (Kz), which is roughly 0.045 USD.
